Going undercover online

Covert work from home

Of course, with emails, Web surfing and online communities all detecting your IP address, the big lesson to be learned is: don't attempt covert work from your office.

However, even covert work undertaken from home can present difficulties.

In the past, your Internet service provider issued you with a different IP address each time you went online.

However, in these days of broadband Internet, it is common for users to be issued with a fixed or "static" IP address.

Anyone obtaining your IP address from an email you send from home, can enter it into Google.

If the search brings back pages containing compromising results, e.g. message board posts you've sent in the past that contain your real name and IP address, then your cover can be blown.
